Summary

Critiques average tribal/kindred decks as too basic, rigid (need ~30+ of a type), samey, and creature-reliant. Fixes: treat deck as themed experience; lean into theme since tribal decks sit at bracket 2-3 with power headroom; use a 33-card-deck or character-sheet method for focus. Don't auto-pick the popular commander (avoid Krenko for goblins, Pantlaza/Gishath for dinos) and don't blindly netdeck EDHRECΓÇöuse it as inspiration, building 'what can be, not what is.' Chase win conditions beyond turning creatures sideways. Examples: Atla Palani egg/dinosaur-lottery; Owen Grady adds blue (Cresting Mosasaurus, Nezahal); Huatli, Warrior Poet enrage (Ranging Raptors, Siegehorn Ceratops, Polyraptor) plus Siegehorn+Cacophonodon untap combo into Fling/Chandra's Ignition; Elenda graveyard dinos (Careful Study, discard Apex Altisaur, Discover into Expropriate). Pirates via Edward Kenway/Don Andres theft. Lorwyn picks: High Priest of Mokant elf control using proliferate/counters to win with Millennium Calendar + Branching Evolution/Doomsday; Kykar cleric (Boros) with Test of Endurance/Felidar Sovereign/Etherflux Reservoir; Ashling elemental comboΓÇöevoke plus cost reduction enables free elementals, Emrakul cascade, and payoffs Enrage Flamecaster, Champion of the Path, Twinflame Traveler, Jubilation, Thunderfoot.

Key Clips

  • [05:15] Firstly, I would suggest not simply thinking of your deck as a deck, but rather think of it as an experience. Tribal decks are at their core a themed magic deck, and leaning into theme will make your deck far more interesting and unique. This plays well with the fact that most of these decks have a power ceiling.
  • [07:30] I think you shouldn't simply pick the most popular commander for the type of deck you're trying to build. If you're building goblins, don't automatically pick Krenko. If you're building dinosaurs, don't automatically pick Pantlaza.
  • [08:10] If you're in the mood for a fight, Huatli, Warrior Poet is really great as a fight-focused commander. In this deck we don't need to worry about space for creature removal, and we can work in some great enrage synergy like Ranging Raptors or Siegehorn Ceratops.
  • [08:32] Pairing up the Siegehorn and a Cacophonodon: one activation gets the Siegehorn four counters and can untap both Huatli and a land, allowing us to repeat it as much as we want. Add a Fling or a Chandra's Ignition into the mix and all of your opponents are getting a visit from the Grim Reaper.
  • [09:39] Once you've identified a good commander and the theme of your deck, I greatly advise not simply net-decking or grabbing the most commonly used cards from a place like EDHREC. Doing this will automatically make your deck like all the other average decks with all the baggage I talked about before.
  • [10:54] Mortdog often says the data that we as players have only tells us what is, not what can be. The collective groupthink, whilst a very useful tool, only tells you what others have already done, not what you can do or what is possible.
  • [12:44] High Priest of Mokant: where most elf decks are about being aggressive, Mokant's design encourages much more of a mid-range or control play style. Mokant plays elves to drain opposing creatures of their power and toughness, and instead of life loss we get to proliferate, draining those creatures even more.
  • [14:57] Ashling's evoke ability basically negates the need for a lot of colored mana in an otherwise five-color deck, and builds that only cost colorless mana open the door to cost reduction. If you get your cost reduction to four colorless mana, elementals are now free to evoke ΓÇö Emrakul's double eight-mana cascade for zero mana.
